Product review: micellar water

Removing make-up after a long day, or night, can be an onerous task. I know that sometimes I just cannot be bothered having to do this extra step before the usual cleanse-tone-moisturise routine. And don’t even get me started on removing waterproof mascara; let’s just say that not all make-up removers are created equal.

Enter micellar water. *cue heavenly music* At least every beauty addict will rave about the benefits of micellar water. Unlike its counterpart, the regular make-up remover, micellar water has no oils and is perfect for those with sensitive skin, and even those without.

At first, Bioderma was the only brand you could buy, which was annoying as you couldn’t actually just pick it up at the supermarket (in Australia anyway). But soon, once everyone got on the trend, every brand started making micellar water.

Personally, I’m a fan. What I love most is that because it’s water-based, you can actually just use it as a skin refresher throughout the day and I’ve even resorted to using it as a toner for days I run out of actual toner.

Having tried my fair share of msicellar solution, below is a review of some the best on the market.

pureviviPurevivi Cleansing Lotion

This was a Laos purchase when I desperately needed a toner but didn’t want to pay a ransom for a brand that would normally cost less at home. As I’ve admitted before, I am slightly obsessed with Japanese skincare products, and this was covered in Japanese writing so I thought ‘well, it’s better than nothing!’. As soon as I got home, I Googled it to make sure I didn’t spend my hard-earned volunteer’s allowance on a dud, and relief washed over me when I discovered this was a cult Asian product. Put simply, it works! It gets every last trace of make-up and dirt off your face, leaving it fresh and ready for the next step of your skincare routine. I actually use it as both make-up remover and toner, and I think it works better as a toner. I’m not sure if this is available outside of Asia, but you can purchase it online via Amazon.

biodermaBioderma Sensibio H20 Solution Micellaire Demaquillant

Or in English, make-up removing micellar solution. The Holy Grail of supermodels and top make-up artists everywhere. My verdict? Not that great. Hear me out. I agree it takes make-up off quite effectively, although it struggles a bit with my waterproof mascara, but the problem I have is that my skin doesn’t feel clean. Yes, it’s not a cleanser, but it does say it’s cleansing and make-up removing. No matter how many times I apply this, there’s still make-up on my skin. This is great for those on the go, or backstage models and artists who apply multiple looks in a day, but for the regular person, you’re better off using a make-up removing wipe instead. Sorry Bioderma fans.

garnierGarnier Skinactive Micellar Cleansing Water

Yes! This is a proper micellar water make-up remover. I bought this after watching a review from beauty blogger Estee Lalonde, who listed it as one of her monthly favourites, and I have to agree with her. This stuff will legit remove all traces of make-up and leaves your skin squeaky clean and refreshed. This is probably the most affordable product on this list, so if you like the good stuff at a good price, this micellar solution is your go-to product. I will definitely be purchasing this again, and again, and again.

caudalieCaudalie Micellar Cleansing Water

I love Caudalie. I love their name, their packaging, their stores and I want all their products! Their micellar water is so beautiful. One of the main ingredients is grape water, a key ingredient in most of their products, it’s lightly scented and leaves your skin hydrated and fresh. It removes make-up really well, especially waterproof make-up and is great for those with sensitive or acne-prone skin as it doesn’t irritate. I love using this as a toner and just as a general pick-me-up, especially if I’ve been flying. A little bit on the pricier side, this is great for days when you just want to feel luxurious.
